Spiritual Words that Inspired and Are Inspiring Me

(Everything arises in dependence.)

(If and only if you observe that everything is impermanent, you get enlightened.)

(Observe yourself unbiasedly!/Be mindful!/Be present!/Live in NOW!)

Buddha (624-544 B.C.)

(Live in the middle way!)

(Every real is unreal, both real and unreal, neither real nor unreal.)

Nāgārjuna (150-250)

(Hui Neng has no ways and means; To insulate the mind from all thoughts;Circumstances often react on my mind; And I wonder how can the Bodhi tree grow?)

(The Kingdom of Buddha is in this world;Within which enlightenment is to be sought. To seek enlightenment by separating from this world Is as absurd as to search for a rabbit’s horn.)

Hui Neng (638-713)

Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986)

  • Since every movement of the mind to be free is the result of its conditioning and must therefore bring about further conditioning, the mind can be free only when it is completely still.
  • Freedom is not a reaction; freedom is not choice. It is man's pretence that because he has choice he is free. Freedom is pure observation without direction, without fear of punishment and reward. Freedom is without motive; freedom is not at the end of the evolution of man but lies in the first step of his existence. In observation one begins to discover the lack of freedom. Freedom is found in the choiceless awareness of our daily existence.
  • If we completely reject, not intellectually but actually, all so-called spiritual authority, all ceremonies, rituals and dogmas, it means that we stand alone and are already in conflict with society; we cease to be respectable human beings. A respectable human being cannot possibly come near to that infinite, immeasurable, reality.
  • I maintain that Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. ... The moment you follow someone you cease to follow Truth.

Master Yin Sun (1906-2005)

(Morality and wisdom are one, not two!)

(Nothing is special, including the death.)

(Even if there is a shadow of clinging, "I" would not disappear.)

(Practice yourself in sufferings. Do not waste them!)

(There are two kinds of suffering: the suffering that leads to more suffering and the suffering that leads to the end of suffering. If you are not willing to face the second kind of suffering, you will surely continue to experience the first.)

Ajahn Chah (1918-1992)

  • Being nobody, going nowhere!

  • Be an island!
Ayya Khema (1923-1997)

Ti Fang (1941-)

(Nothing is wrong.)

(If you really understand that this life is empty, why bother to terminate your sufferings?)

(When you observe your thoughts unbiasedly, your thoughts disappear immediately. When you are aware of the illusion, the illusion becomes the truth.)

(Just discover the truth, not to achieve something! Actually, you cannot achieve anything.)

(One of the reasons you have compassion is that impermanence is so obvious, yet people just don't see it.)

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche (1961-)
